Janice Wainwright: UK vintage dress designer rare two-piece top and skirt

Janice Wainwright is one of my favourite British designers. With a career spanning the 60s into the 80s she created some of the most amazing pieces that ranged from billowing 70’s dresses decorated with devore velvet, to 20’s flapper style cocktail dresses with the most amazing draping. In the 80’s, sharp tailoring was the order of the day as seen in this rare Janice Wainwright 80’s fashion film

When I uncover a vintage Janice Wainwright design, I find it very difficult to let it go! I think she stands happily alongside Ossie Clark, Thea Porter and Jean Varon and her choice of exquisite fabric and embellishment never ceases to delight. I have quite a personal collection of a range of Janice Wainwright’s iconic pieces, some of which I can even squeeze into!

One amazing, rare vintage piece (that I have never worn) came from a private collection and is new to market.

It’s a pure silk two-piece top and flippy skirt, designed in a soft muted gold and black colour way. The top is batwing and the skirt flows like cream from the waist over the hips. It’s a vintage size 12 (small waist but fits larger through the top because of the draping). Way too small for me, but perfect for someone who can wear it, or for a collector. It’s said that there is no such thing as perfect condition in vintage clothing, only perfect vintage condition, but like most of my Frock & Stole Vintage collection for discerning vintage fashionistas, this Janice Wainwright set is simply divine!
